Diaper need is a year-round issue, but during the winter months, the struggle becomes even more severe for many families in Knoxville. As temperatures drop, household expenses rise—heating bills increase, food costs can go up, and holiday expenses stretch already tight budgets. For families already facing financial hardship, buying diapers becomes even more of a challenge, forcing parents to make impossible choices between keeping their homes warm and providing basic essentials for their babies.
Why Winter Increases Diaper Need
During the winter, families often experience a financial squeeze due to:
- Higher utility bills – Heating costs can skyrocket, leaving families with little extra money for other necessities.
- Holiday expenses – While many enjoy the season of giving, parents struggling to afford diapers feel added pressure when trying to provide a joyful holiday for their children.
- Limited job opportunities – Seasonal jobs end, and extreme weather can impact hourly workers who may face reduced hours or layoffs.
Diapers are a non-negotiable item—babies need them every day, and without them, parents may be forced to stretch diaper use, leading to rashes, infections, and increased stress. In Tennessee, we do have government assistance for diapers, however it limits each parent to 100 diapers per month, which is typically not enough.
How You Can Help This Winter
At Helping Mamas Knoxville, we distribute thousands of diapers each month to families in need through our partner agencies. But as winter demand rises, we need your help to keep our shelves stocked.
Here’s how you can make an impact:
- Donate Diapers – We accept new and opened packs of diapers in all sizes, especially sizes 4-7 and Pull-Ups.
- Host a Diaper Drive – Gather your friends, family, or coworkers to collect diapers and wipes for local families.
- Make a Financial Contribution – Your donation allows us to purchase diapers in bulk and meet urgent needs faster. We are able to make our dollars go even further through our wonderful partnership with The National Diaper Bank Network.
